JUNE 2010

COMMANDER’S COMMENTS

For those who missed our May meeting, our speaker was both entertaining and informative.  Clerk of Court, Julie Armstrong introduced us to the county    judiciary and our responsibilities in a free society.  The Clerk's Office provides administrative support for the Civil, Criminal and Family Court. This office  also maintains dockets of the courts, receives and disburses child support fees, fines and costs, and maintains court records.  With her 100 plus staff, she stays busy making sure the courts are run effectively and efficiently.  Her humorous anecdotes about citizens appearing before the courts brought laughter and amazement from those attending.  If you ever have the misfortune of having to be on the defendant side of the isle have your attorney contact Julie to see who the presiding Judge is that day.  Who’s on the bench can make or break your day.

We’re fast approaching this year’s Youth Leadership Conference onboard the Yorktown, June 22-25. We’ve heard from a number of our supporters and expect to see at least 80 of our best and brightest students again this year.  I want to encourage you to take at least a few moments out of your day during this year’s conference to come onboard and meet some of these young leaders.  If you can stand the heat, we begin each conference on the flight deck with games designed to build confidence and relationships among the attendees.  They learn how to build friendships that will last a lifetime in just one hour of game based challenge.  If you’ve never had a chance to bring tears to your eyes, I encourage you to attend the Friday morning session with Colonel Quincy Collins. He’ll be speaking at 10:00 AM   His recitation of “I Am Old Glory” is sure to bring out an emotional response.

I would be remiss if I did not thank the other officers and staff members who provided me invaluable help during my term of office.  They did a great job and I know that CAPT Fred Massey can expect no less this coming year.  Remember, we will not be meeting in July and August so have a safe and enjoyable summer.  We will see you again in September.

YOUR 2010-2011 OFFICERS.  The officers for the coming year are CAPT Fred Massey, Chapter Commander, CPT Chuck Gilmer, Vice Commander, CAPT Jim Kenney, Adjutant, and LtCol Gerry Arter, Treasurer.  Congratulations gentlemen; the membership looks forward to your leadership this coming year.  Although these are our elected officers the Chapter always welcomes willing hands.  All you need to do is to contact any one of them.

CHAPTER COMMUNICATIONS.  Communications with members is repeatedly one of the main reasons for retaining membership while lack of communications is one of the main reasons for dropping memberships.  Within the Chapter we have primarily used our newsletter, which is published 10 times a year and follow-up telephone calls as our means of communicating with the members.  Although we have a bulk mailing permit and thereby qualify for lower postage costs, each newsletter costs approximately $85.  This cost includes the reproduction, postage, and a pro rata cost of the annual permit.  It does not include the sweat equity cost of folding, sealing, and labeling.

Many organizations have made the switch to email in place of bulk mailing to not only save costs, but to improve the timing and distribution of their newsletters.  So we are asking those of you who have and use email to send your email address to our Adjutant, CAPT Jim Kenney at jakenneysr@bellsouth.net.  We encourage your response to this request and assure you that your email address will not be used for any political or business purposes.  We will continue to use our bulk mailing permit until we have enough email addresses to justify using email as our primary distribution method.  Meanwhile for those of you who use computers regularly check out our web site www.miliord.org.

PASSINGS.  Companion Orion Paul Canant, Colonel USAF (Ret) died May 29, 2010.  Paul was one of our few remaining WWII members and former commander of Charleston AFB.  Many of us knew him as Director of Retiree Affairs at the Base and through his civic and political activities.  He was a champion of the military and valued member of the Order.

CHAPTER CHATTER.  Space permitting we hope to use this section to relay news of members.  Please pass on news of members of yourself to Ned Adams.  Email is preferred, nedzmail@comcast.net, but if that is not your habit, please call me at 556-0260.

CWO LEE BROADWELL MEMORIAL FUND.  Normally in this section of the newsletter we implore you to reach into your wallets and pocket books to contribute to the CWO Lee Broadwell Memorial Fund which pays for the Chapter’s Patriotic Education activities.  This month we salute all of you who have participated over the past year, one which there was great economic uncertainty and steep declines in investment income.  Your generous support in the current economic environment is solid evidence that the programs we conduct are a high priority for your continued support of the Chapter and the values of the Order.

With the Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs and the presentation of medals to the ROTC and JROTC behind us, there is one more event coming up in which you can see and enjoy the results of your generosity.  That is the Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) which will be held onboard the Yorktown June 22-25.  As noted in the Commander’s Comments it is gratifying to see 80-100 high school students respond to an intense program of leadership exposure and involvement.  For specific information as to schedule and visiting, please contact CAPT Fred Massey 797-5807.

Even though we don’t have our hands out this month we always welcome contributions to the fund.  Since the May Newsletter the following donations have been received:

RADM Lee Fisher  IMO CWO Lee Broadwell

Please make your tax deductible contribution in support of these PE/YLC activities NOW!
