MASSING OF THE COLORS

6 MARCH 2011

The General Westmoreland/Charleston Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) will conduct the twelfth annual Massing of the Colors ceremony at the Summerall Chapel on The Citadel Campus at 3:00 PM on Sunday 6 March 2011.

The general public is invited to attend. Guests are requested to arrive in time to be seated in the chapel prior to 2:45 PM.  Parking is available on The Citadel campus.

Commander Richard L. Schreadley, USN (Retired), and retired Executive Editor of the Charleston Post and Courier, will be the principal speaker.

Commander Schreadley enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1949, was commissioned in 1955, and retired from active duty in 1973.  He   is a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam conflict, and military service   includes three tours in command at sea.    His formal education began in a one room country school in Pennsylvania and culminated with a PhD degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Dr.  Schreadley is the author of   “From the Rivers to the Sea,” a history of the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, and “Valor and Virtue,” a history of the Washington Light Infantry.   He continues as a frequent guest editorialist with the Post and Courier, writing on a wide range of current military, political and patriotic topics.

Last year, 34 color guards accepted the invitation to participate and about two hundred persons attended this inspiring patriotic and religious service honoring the Flag of the United States of America and the Colors of participating units.  The ceremony is dedicated to the memory of Military Service members who have given their lives to preserve liberty in this Country.  It also honors those who have served, and those who are serving to ensure continued freedom and to preserve military heritage.

The General Westmoreland MOWW Chapter has invited participation by the Color Guards of all area ROTC and JROTC units, as well as active military commands and units, public safety units, groups of retired and former military personnel, civic organizations and youth groups including the Navy League Sea Cadets, Boy and Girl Scouts of the Low country. Special invitations have been extended to civic and military leaders.

The public is invited to honor the flags of participating units by attending this patriotic and inspiring ceremony, with family and friends.
