About the Military Order of the World Wars in Charleston and the Low Country
With about 100 members in the Charleston Area, the Chapter is actively engaged in Patriotic Education. Two of the principle activities are the annual Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) and the Massing of the Colors(MOTC) Ceremony.
For the past ten years, outstanding high school students have come to the Carrier Yorktown at Patriot's Point for four days of intensive leadership training during the last week in June. Young leaders from all over the Southeast are nominated and sponsored by MOWW Chapters, including Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Columbus GA, Charlotte, NC, Columbia, SC; and Richmond and Roanoke, VA. The General Westmoreland Chapter provided scholarships for about 20 students from the Low Country last year. Local Companion Captain Fred Massey, USN (Ret.) is Director of the YLC.
The Massing of the Colors is conducted the first Sunday in March each year at Citadel's Summerall Chapel. About 40 color guards from military, police, fire, ROTC, JROTC, patriotic and civic organizations post their colors in a colorful ceremony which includes a distinguished speaker addressing a topic of patriotic significance. The general public is always invited to attend.
Luncheon meetings with interesting speakers on topics related to the MOWW Preamble are held monthly, September through June. See the Calendar for locations, times, and information on speakers. Each Armed Service is recognized on its birthday, and our Chapter holds special luncheon meetings on National Security and Law and Order each year.
The General Westmoreland Chapter supports over 40 ROTC and JROTC Units, awarding medals to outstanding cadets and midshipmen in each unit annually. All Girl Scouts achieving a Golden Award and Boy Scouts reaching Eagle rank in the lowcountry are awarded MOWW Certificates of Recognition.
